ViewSonic VX1945wm 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor with Integrated iPod Dock Review

First off, let's establish what this is NOT -- it isn't a monitor with "integrated" iPod dock. The base (which has the dock) is essentially an add-on USB hub to the monitor. The cable connections and even the power supply are separate from the monitor. This is not totally bad (you can charge your iPod or USB device while the monitor and computer are turned off), but it can be confusing if you expect to get an integrated unit.

I had read other reviews about how poor the speakers were, but I didn't worry because I had cheap PC speakers that had to be at least 10 years old. Well, sub-woofer or no, the VX1945wm speakers are of the same audio quality. Maybe not that good. Without the subwoofer (it has a separate volume control, so you can turn it down) the quality is worse than the built-in speaker in my Mac!

If you have a Mac, DO NOT USE INCLUDED DRIVERS. First, the installer is for OS9; second, the installer froze my system; third, they are totally unnecessary (OS X can use the monitor out of the box just fine).

The USB connections (although upside down, as noted in another review) work fine and are handy (unless you have a device that assumes it will be put in right-side up). The base power supply provides power to the USB ports (three in front, one in back) and can be turned on and off separately from the monitor.

The iPod dock works as advertised with my 5th gen 80GB iPod. The VX1945wm also comes with other dock adaptors for the other iPod models.

The memory card sockets are on the side of the base and angled back slightly; this makes them hard to get to, and you may have to work by feel and trial & error. I was able to use my CF and SD cards with no problem.

Screen brightness and clarity is outstanding. I have a ViewSonic Professional Series P95f CRT monitor, which was considered upper tier not long ago; I have both attached to my Mac, so I can literally do a side by side comparison on a daily basis. The VX1945wm blows it away. The screen area is slightly shorter, but wider (16:9 rather than 4:3 ratio), so I run it at 1440x900 vs. 1280x1024 for the CRT. Viewing angle is not as good for the LCD, alas, so if you have something on your monitor you want to show someone they need to be right behind you for the best view.

Five stars for the monitor, minus two stars for the speakers, plus one star for the base.

ViewSonic VP2130b 21.3-inch Ultra-Slim Bezel LCD Monitor Review

This monitor is a terrific value if you are looking for a 21" monitor that is not a widescreen style.Contrast, brightness, and viewing angle compares favorably to monitors costing hundreds of dollars more. I have not had any trouble in the first few months I have owned it and I will purchase another one for work.

2 years later the monitor died (would not come on, no light).I sent it in for warranty service since it had a 3-year warranty.I had to pay the shipping to California. I will be without my monitor for 6 weeks minimum.How could it possibly take so long to determine that the monitor is dead, fix it or send me a replacement?

ViewSonic VX2245wm 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor with Integrated iPod Dock Review

Let me begin by first agreeing the general assessment that the sound is truly awful. But seriously, what's so surprising? The thing has a 3 inch sub woofer. I laughed when I read it and again when I heard it. I didn't expect great sound, so I'm not disappointed. Still, the sound is so bad that it knocks a star from my review.

The screen is 22 inches diagonally, but in terms of 'feel' it measure in acres. It's huge. The picture is razor sharp and brilliant.

The monitor shell is very elegant with it's high gloss, piano black/satin silver color scheme. The iPod dock and USB hub built into the unit's base eliminate all computer peripheral clutter. The only time you need to touch your computer tower is to feed it disks or to use the power button. The iPod, flash drives, memory cards, headphones, audio input or any USB device can be plugged right into the monitor, giving you more flexibility in where you keep (or hide) your tower. Though I have no use for it, it even has a built in microphone. Windows Vista recognized the USB hub and card reader(s) and installed it's own drivers without prompting.

For some reason, some people seem to think the presence of an iPod dock means that this monitor is for listening to your iPod. I use the dock to sync and manage. The song files are already on the computer. Why wear out the iPod, when you can listen to the exact same material from your computer? As a sync dock, it's a very nice convenience.

For the picture quality, I'd give this 5 stars. For the convenience of the iPod dock/card reader/USB hub/audio in and headphone jacks - another 5. For the sound? Forget about it. Get some decent speakers and enjoy what this monitor does very well.

ViewSonic's VX2739WM 27-Inch 1920x1080 Full HD Monitor Review

I used a 19inch Samsung HDTV Ln-1954H as a computer monitor. The desktop, icons, graphics, games- everything seemed to be extra bright. Ive used an Acer monitor, NEC, as well as a Mac and found none of those to be as bright. 2 years later, I upgraded to this Viewsonic. I had been over the search engine trying to find hands-on articles, reviews, pictures, and Ive found mixed reviews. A few reviews cited a bleed (light/glow appearing around the edges of the LCD), bleached colors, and a wobbly stand. While the stand, in my opinion, is stable enough (provided you fasten it to the neck or can be mounted on wall) the monitor is fine [notice I make no mention of the audio function]. After the brighter-than-normal colors on the Samsung, I find the so called bleached colors are welcome. When playing a video disk, the colors are seem normal- although a user can adjust the color temperature on the OnScreen Display. A user can also use the manual controls through a video card suite like ATI Catalyst Control Center or the NVidia equivalent.
A nice quality of the this Viewsonic makes everything look sharp- the Windows Start button in Windows7 looks sharper, the Windows logo in Office2007 does too. Adobe Creative Suite looks as sharp as it should on a Mac (although proper color adjustments are still necessary for graphic work). Games look sharp, there is no ghosting, thanks to the 1MS response time. My brother had noticed a increase in the amount of detail that the Viewsonic shows over my old Samsung.
Hooked up to a HDMI switcher, a game console also looks nice on this machine. The PS3 XMB looks sharp, Blu-Rays seem better (although the increase in the screen size also helps here), even the Earth visualization in the music player seems a whole lot better. An AT&T cable box, connected via HDMI, looks nice too. Upscaling on the HD channels as well as the native upscaling on a capable computer and game console keeps a good image quality. Nothing seems stretched. Now I must mention this: Using a HDMI cable to connect a HD monitor/HDTV to a computer, cable/sat box, game console is recommended to preserve the screen aspect! If you use anything less the image quality will be significantly reduced.

While the bleed is noticeable- it is no different that my Samsung or other monitors Ive used. Sure, it may be noticeable while watching a movie but it is not a show stopper. Ive watched several movies already and have not noticed it.
The sound is another issue. While HDMI cables support -of course- video they also support audio. This monitor supports Dolby something or another but the audio quality is horrible. Sounds like the monitor has metal cans around the speakers. There is volume control in the OSD but I recommend it on mute, adjust your computer default playback device to computer speakers, and get a Windows Media Center compatible remote like a Gyration GYR3101US. Finding a good balance with the monitor's volume and the volume of your box or console is difficult. While Comcast had a volume control for its HD box, AT&T does not. A PS3 has a volume control for music and video disks but not for games. Even then, the PS3 volume contorl is not that advanced or helpful.
If you connect a game console or cable/sat box: use a theater system. With the monitor's audio quality so bad I would say there are no or very few other options.

Would I recommend this product?
I like it but there is room for improvement. While this monitor performs well by simply displaying your desktop and windows, showing graphics and games with nothing but praise, and increases the amount of workspace to have plenty of windows open- I would recommend it for the family computer, a single user computer, work computer. I would not recommend this monitor for those who would would use it strictly for music(poor audio quality and control) or videos and the hardcore gamers (bleed through). This is a good monitor but for everyday use with minimal to moderate multimedia applications.

What is 1ms response time?
Response time in monitors refer to the amount of time a pixel (dot) takes to go from black to white and back to black again. It is measured in milliseconds (ms).
