LG W2452T 24-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

LG W2452T 24 inch Widescreen LCD MonitorI've had my LG W2452T for about 6 months now.Until a few days ago, I would have highly recommended this product. The color, contrast, etc are all great. The price is pretty good for what you get as well. The only bad thing out of the box is its casing: its seems like really cheap plastic.

However, I can no longer recommend this product at all. After 6 months of perfect operation, it seems to be failing.A few days ago it started to randomly flicker: it would go blank (not black, blank) and then come back a second or two later. At first I thought it was the video card or the drivers; but after some major troubleshooting I think the problem is the monitor itself. It seems to be overheating which is causing these problems: the flickering only starts after using the monitor for a while, then the flickers increase in frequency.I've ultimately "solved" the problem by placing a small fan at its back (it heats up mostly at the top) and the problems have gone away.To me this is not an acceptable solution, but its out of warranty and I may as well buy a new monitor rather than get it repaired.

I cannot say if this problem is common to all units or if it was just my bad luck to get a defective one, but its something to consider for other buyers.

UPDATE: I finally decided to try and get the monitor repaired after the flicker issue mentioned above became intolerable.I was prepared to pay for it: it turns out that even though there is only a 90 day warranty for service, there is a 1 year warranty on parts.I assumed this meant I would be paying for the work.To my surprise, LG took the old unit and sent me a completely new replacement (not refurbished) with no questions asked. They even paid for both shipments: the new one to me and for the broken unit to be shipped back to them.Great service from LG.I would upgrade my rating to 5 stars if amazon.com would allow it.

I basically bought this Dell monitor for its ergonomic features for working long hours but I wouldn't recommend it for casual home PC shoppers.

Dell 2407 WFP Review

Dell 2407 WFPYou can't overstate the difference in going from a 19-inch CRT to a 24-inch LCD.If you use a PC a lot, it'll change your life. That's true for me even though I routinely use two monitors at the same time with an "extended desktop" in Windows XP Pro.

The Dell 2407WFP is an extremely well-though-out, high-quality piece of hardware and I highly recommend it.

But here are some things that you should know about extended-width monitors in general that I tried to find out before I bought this one, but couldn't:

1.If your graphics card is more than a year old and currently supports a monitor with a 4:3 aspect ratio, it probably will NOT correctly support the 16:10 aspect ratio of a widescreen monitor.Instead, it takes a 4x3 image and stretches it to fill the new widescreen. That means that photos will be distorted by being too wide, much like an HDTV does to a normal 4:3 television image.

2.However, it's still worth it even with an older graphics card.Because of the increase in size, you can increase the resolution displayed by your graphics card to 1280 x 1024 or 1600 x 1200.This will still have a "stretched" 4:3 aspect ratio, but you can get a lot more on the screen. For example, Outlook's three columns have enough space that the third preview column is as wide as a normal page. You can see a great many more Excel spreadsheet columns.Programs that will display a variety of items like Paperport have a lot more room to spread out and are MUCH easier to use. Programs that can't take advantage of the increased width as easily--for example Word or Internet Explorer--still look better on this monitor.Everything is still distorted by the stretched width, but you only notice it for photos--and you even get used to that.If you have a traditional monitor next to this LCD like I do, you can move the image to that monitor to eliminate the distortion if you're really curious about the difference.I quit bothering after a while.

3.Newer graphics cards will support true widescreen capability, and then you really have something.Your PC probably came with a smaller widescreen monitor in that case. But don't sweat it if your card is relegated to the 4:3 aspect ratio.

4.It also takes a newer graphics card to support rotating the display to portrait mode, which would be handy for Word and IE documents, for example. The PC graphics card enables and controls that functionality, not the monitor.

5.Playing TV through this monitor is great but you have to be aware of a few things.First, the provided DVI port does not work with 1080i video output by the DVI port of a cable modem. For technical reasons that are over my head, this model does not support interlaced video.Apparently future versions may.Second, the composite ports ARE compatible with the output from a cable box and the resulting TV looks beautiful. There is probably loss from the additional data conversions on each end, but it's not noticeable. What IS noticeable is the fact that PC widescreen monitors like this one ALL have 16:10 aspect ratios, while widescreen TVs ALL have 16:9 aspect ratios.(That probably makes sense to someone, but I haven't met that person yet.It probably has to do with some perceived reduced utility when using PC programs on a monitor that isn't "tall" enough.)When the cable box outputs its video to the monitor, you don't get the slight letterboxing I expected with narrow dark bands at the top and bottom.Instead, the picture stretches vertically to fit the screen, much as it stretches horizontally for the 4:3 output of a PC graphics card. The result is that the picture is about 11% taller than it should be--not terribly noticeable but still there. If you instead route TV to the monitor through a Vista HD-capable PC, this problem will be eliminated. At that point, your PC will have the advantage of being connected to the monitor though the DVI port as well. The only disadvantages are the usual delays and vagaries of Windows over and above the cable box, but Vista is much better than XP in that regard. And of course, Vista gives you DVR capability.

The only "con" specific to this monitor that I could find is that the settings for picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture are not "sticky".Once you set it up the way you want, it works great. But as soon as you change the input source from, say, the TV composite ports to the VGA PC port and back again, you have to start all over again when you activate either feature.

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

HP W2408H 24-inch Widescreen LCD MonitorI recently did some much needed upgrades for my home office and this by far my favorite.I first saw it in Best Buy, came home to check for online reviews and to see if I could find it cheaper...I did at Amazon!

It's VERY easy to set up and is crystal clear.( I mean, razor sharp -- no stretched or blurred look anywhere!)However, there was something not quite right with the colors (especially greens) that really bothered me.PLUS the HP "My Display" software that goes with it that contains all of the drivers etc, is not fully functional on non HP machines. (meaning no calibration was available for color or contrast beyond what's built into the monitor itself which was never enough to fix my problem)I was so frustrated and disappointed.(I had been warned of this on another site but thought I'd take a gamble)Well, after trying to hook it up via the HDMI (from VGA) cable that came with it to a new $150 video card -- the colors were still way off and now the screen was all jumpy from that stupid card...(that went right back!) Then, I noticed something when I right clicked on my desktop to adjust my display settings (in XP pro) there was a selection (that had been there all along...duh) that said NVIDIA Control Panel (my internal graphics card) and I was able to calibrate the colors and adjust everything else there and now everything's hunky dory! When it first boots up, the colors look a little neon-ish again but within seconds it goes to the profile I created from my graphics card software.I am sure many would have figured it out sooner than I did, I just wanted to prevent anyone else from beating their head against the wall for a week like I did if I could.(BTW, I have completely removed the video card that I bought and it's hooked up via VGA and it is still crisp and clear)

**BTW, even though the My Display software is largely useless for me, I left it there. For some reason when I uninstalled it, the light that's under the transparent power button on the top of the monitor goes away. That was the only noticeable change after uninstalling it but it annoyed me, so I reinstalled it and it's back on and I just ignore the software**

My husband and I publish a local magazine that is glossy and full color and I am able to do so much more with this monitor than I could before.I can view two (sometimes 3) projects side by side if need be...I love that! And typing an email in outlook looks like it's in about a 60 font! And programs like Illustrator where you need a lot of workspace it's invaluable.I never have to scroll around to grab or view something. My last monitor was a 19" Sony flat panel (that cost more than TWICE what this one did 4 years ago) and I thought it was just fine but once I plugged this lil beauty in I quickly passed it on to my son for his computer.I haven't needed to use the portrait position of the screen so I haven't even tried it.But it came that way when it arrived and was very easy to swivel back around.

One bad thing...don't count on ditching your speakers for the ones that come with this one -- man do they stink!I swear my laptop has better speakers. But it's sort of like people griping that their cell phone camera doesn't take good enough pictures. If you want a good camera buy a camera! If you want a good monitor buy this one and just pretend the speakers aren't even there. The price is way worth it even without the speakers.

Apple Cinema 23-inch HD Flat-Panel Display Review

Apple Cinema 23-inch HD Flat-Panel DisplayI've been looking for a new WUXGA monitor for the last month, and I've conducted a lot of research. I narrowed down my choice to these monitors: Dell 2405FPW, Samsung 244T, ViewSonic VP2330wb, HP L2335, and Sony SDM-P234/B.

I will be using the monitor for coding, illustration, and DVD playback, in that order of importance. Prolonged periods of looking at text must be easy on the eyes. It also has to have natural colors with no casts or artifacts and a reasonable response time.

Two of these monitors are 24" and their panels are made by Samsung, the 2405FPW and the 244T. The others are 23" and their panels are made by LG-Philips.

The Dell 2405FPW was ruled out because, even though it's the cheapest by a big margin, it has a notorious high-pitch squeal problem that Dell doesn't acknowledge or address and people are still getting squealers to this day. This would surely drive me crazy. In addition, I don't like the shiny Dell logo at the front bezel, and the silver plastic stand looks very cheesy. I also heard reports that the brightness is so strong it would fry your eyes, even if you turn it all the way down. It might be good for gaming, but staring at texts for extended periods leaves you with eye fatigue. Dude, you're NOT getting a Dell!

The Samsung 244T is the most expensive of the bunch, and it has the fastest response time. However, since its pixel pitch is 0.27, text doesn't look as crisp as it does on the LG-Philips monitors, which have a pixel pitch of 0.258. Add to this the excessive brightness and an ugly stand that looks like a shovel handle and it's a no go!

The main problem with the HP L2335 is that it's been discontinued by the manufacturer, and that doesn't inspire confidence. The earlier batches of the LG-Philips 23" panels had pink and yellow cast problems, and if you want to buy a monitor that uses these panels, you need to make sure its one of the latest batches. In addition, the stand doesn't have cable management, so the wires droop all over the place. No go!

The Sony looks pretty good, but its scarce reviews on the web aren't encouraging, especially those about units that die after a couple of months and don't get replaced for weeks. Furthermore, I'm not a big fan of sliver/black monitors (like the 2405FPW, L2335, and SDM-P234/B). I prefer either all black or all silver (like the 244T, VP2330wb, and Cinema 23 HD). No go!

The ViewSonic VP2330wb is very close. It looks pretty good, pivots, and has a very good response time. In addition, my current monitor is a ViewSonic VX2000. I had it for more than two years and I'm very satisfied with it. So I was kind of inclined to go again with the same brand. According to a ViewSonic rep, however, it won't launch till February 13. In addition, its predecessor, the VP231wb, didn't have good color reproduction, and I prefer a lighter color bezel because it gives a more natural look, so it's skipped for the Apple.

When it comes to looks, the Apple Cinema HD is Miss Universe of the monitors. It's not just a monitor: it's a piece of art (and I'm not even an Apple fan; I use Windoze). On paper, the specs look fantastic. Small pixel pitch for extra clarity, moderate brightness, good response time (not spectacular, but then again, I'll be using it mostly for development), and according to most reviews, its colors look more natural than all the other LG-Philips-based monitors. It doesn't pivot, but that's a non-issue because I'd rather have more windows side-by-side than a single long window.

However, I had misgivings about the Cinema 23 HD because it has a bad rep from all the negative reports about pink color casts and uneven lighting. It seems that most of these complaints are from the earliest LG-Philips batches. But I wasn't really sure, and I had to take my chances.

The first one I bought didn't have bad pixels or a pink color cast, but it had a severe uneven backlighting defect. In a dim environment with a black background, you can easily see a golden/yellow spot at the upper right corner. It's very annoying and distracting when you watch DVDs in a dark room. And if you change your viewing angle vertically, you can see that blacks shift immediately to faint yellow. So I took it back to the Apple Store and got a brand new replacement.

The replacement was awesome. Uniform backlight, no color casts, not a single dead or stuck pixel, and absolutely gorgeous, clean, sharp, vivid, natural picture.

I really love this monitor, but I had to take one star out because Apple has major quality control problems. Apparently getting a good unit is a hit-and-miss proposition, and if you can lay your hands on one, it's worth every penny.

NEC Computers LCD2690WUXI-BK 26-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

NEC Computers LCD2690WUXI-BK 26 inch Widescreen LCD MonitorI already have a Lacie 526 (which is excellent) and needed another large widescreen LCD for another Mac workstation. I ordered this monitor as it's several hundred $ less and has the same specs. Having received it, I am convinced it's the same monitor Lacie sells with their name on it. All controls, color, size, vent locations, stand etc. are exactly like the Lacie 526. So, I am guessing Lacie outsources through NEC. What's more, the Lacie Blue Eye calibrator does a complete auto calibration with it. Lacie says other brand monitors require a manual calibration with their Blue Eye. But the Blue Eye syncs without hesitation and easily creates the monitor profile. I have only used this LCD for 2 weeks so I do not have a lot of experience with it. But so far it is performing just as well as the Lacie - and with a huge savings!

BenQ V2200 Eco LED Backlight LCD Monitor (White) Review

BenQ V2200 Eco LED Backlight LCD MonitorI purchased this about a month ago now, and I am very impressed for the price.Colours are outstanding and the contrast ratio is extremely good for a TN monitor.I was a little skeptical of BenQ but I have used their products before and have been happy with the quality for the price. There were no dead pixels on the monitor.Veiwing angle is not the best on the monitor, not a concern for me though due to the desk it is on.Overall I really like the monitor and it is the only one that I know of that is 1980x1200 and LED backlit for under $300 USD!

Pros:
Bright Colours
LED Backlid
Full HD
Excellent Contrast Ratios
Fast enough for FPSs
Price

Cons:
Viewing Angle
White (depending on opinion)
No DVI Connection (though my DVI to HDMI adapter is working well, and I am buying an ATI 5750 with HDMI on it)
