ASUS VH222H-P 21.5-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black Review

ASUS VH222H-P 21.5 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - BlackI'm not a huge videophile - I still have a CRT television - so my criteria may not be a stringent as others'.That said, I'm very happy with my purchase of this Asus monitor.

I just bought a Mac Mini, and this monitor connected easily via DVI cable to the Mac.Pictures, graphics, internet video and DVDs all look very good, although for watching DVDs I change the monitor profile - TV and movie video seem to be made for BRIGHTER display characteristics, and look too dim on the settings I prefer for computer work. It's not hard to flip the display profile in Mac OS X when I want to watch a movie, but I don't know how one would do it on Windows.

I'll agree with reviews of similar Asus monitors - the onscreen menus for adjusting monitor settings are NOT easy to use. This is the main reason for 4 rather than 5 stars.I ended up picking the best settings I could and resolving to never touch the monitor buttons again.I can use the display settings on the Mac to make any adjustments I need. Also, text is not always smooth, but I suspect that's a Mac OS issue, rather than the monitor: I've read that the newest Mac OS (Snow Leopard) has font smoothing issues that previous versions did not.

I'm very happy with the brightness, color, sharpness, and viewing angle of the screen. For the price, it's much better than I was expecting. The screen tilts on the base up and down through a generous angle - I'd say from 5 degrees forward to 10 degrees back - and the brightness does not diminish when viewed from side angles nearly as much as other flat panel displays I've seen. It's no problem for three or four people to watch a movie, whether from close up or across the room.I know I haven't even seen the best this monitor can do; I have no HD inputs to make use of its native 1920x1080p resolution.

Bottom line: for the price, I doubt you can get a better monitor than this Asus.

ASUS VH236HL-P 23-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black Review

ASUS VH236HL-P 23 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - BlackThe ASUS monitor is a well built monitor. The size of the base makes the monitor fairly stable and the tilt/swivel/height adjustment capability is a welcomed feature.Another great feature is a hotkey to switch from five video preset modes (Game Mode, Night View Mode, Scenery Mode, Standard Mode, Theater Mode) with what ASUS calls SPLENDID(tm) Video Enhancement Technology.

The only negative issue I have is not being able to see the monitor control buttons easily. The wording is hard to read and they arre not illuminated.Granted you don't use these buttons much after you have the features adjusted, but they are hard to see. This issue is very minor and should not keep you from purchasing this monitor.

ASUS MT276HE - 27" Wide LCD Monitors - Black Review

ASUS MT276HE - 27' Wide LCD Monitors - BlackI purchased this monitor to use specifically for gaming as my current PC monitor just wasn't fast enough for gaming. My main monitor is designed for photography, graphic design or similar uses where color accuracy is more important than speed. Before I go into detail, let me just explain why I gave four stars instead of 5.I feel perfection should be hard to get.Now back to the review. The monitor is well packaged. When I received the monitor, I first tested my PS3 games and no surprise, games look fantastic.I do not really see any ghosting which I do see in my Dell U2410.Contrast and colors look great.Blu-ray movies also looked great.I was surprised at the audio as it was louder and cleaner than I expected for a 3 watt speaker. You can not turn the bass all the way up to the highest setting because the audio starts to distort but it does provide decent bass a couple of notches down.Fortunately my monitor arrived without any dead pixels. The mesh covering the speakers are an interesting choice.Nice if you like flowers but you don't really notice it unless you are paying attention to the detail.

Now the next test was connecting it to my PC.This monitor has three inputs, two digital (HDMI) and one analog (VGA).I tried the HDMI input and no surprise, the colors don't look as great as my Dell U2410 but that is to be expected since this panel is a TN 6-bit panel. It doesn't look bad but it is definitely IPS quality. The screen is a matte screen and not glossy which helps if you work in a room with direct sunlight.Glare sucks on glossy screens and so I avoid them at all cost.Glossy screens do add more contrast but in my opinion, the contrast on this monitor looks amazing.

The monitor runs pretty cool.I used to own a Dell 30" monitor and in the summertime, it made my office get really hot.Since this monitor also has an LED panel, it should use less electricity than a traditional CCFL panel.

The game I play most often is Street Fighter IV (but in a month, that will change when Super Street Fighter IV comes out).I just love how clean and smooth it looks on this screen. There is literally no lag on this monitor.I also tried Unreal Tournament 3 on my PC and wow, the game looks terrific on this monitor. This monitor is definitely my favorite monitor for gaming.

Keep in mind that since the two digital inputs on this monitor are HDMI, you may have a problem initially when you connect your PC to this monitor as it may detect it as an HDTV instead of a PC monitor. You will need to turn off overscan correction on your graphics card settings. This will get rid of the black bars on the side of the screen

The bezel on this monitor is a bit big which means those with ATI graphics cards who want to try out Eyefinity may not want to go with this monitor.

The monitor includes a handy little remote.I am personally not a fan of the credit card sized remote controls which the Asus monitor includes as they tend to get lost easily and due to its size, you can not put a great description of what each of the buttons do.The HDTV does have a slot to hide the remote but I would have rather preferred a slightly larger remote.I sometimes forget what each symbol means but I am sure after a while, I'll get over that.

The monitor includes a 3 year warranty which is rare for computer LCD monitors.Hopefully I won't have to use it but its good to know its there if I need it.

Now for some cons.First of all, I generally like to view my Blu-ray movies at 24 frames per second since that is what movies are generally filmed at.This monitor does not support 24P, or at least when I set it to 24P on my Sony Playstation 3, it loses sync when I play a Blu-ray movie.Since this monitor came out in late 2009, I was expecting it to support 24P.Also the monitor stand can not be tilted.Since I use this as a second monitor, it doesn't line up with my Dell 24" so tilting would have been nice. For the price this monitor goes for, I was hoping it would allow tilting. The volume also does not go low enough. This is a problem because it is in my office and my walls are not thick enough and so I have to wear headphones to make sure I don't wake up my 2 year old son when he is napping. All of the buttons are on the top of the Asus monitor except for the power button. All of the HDTVs in my house have the buttons located in the same section so when I want to power on or off the Asus monitor, I sometimes accidentally reach for the top.I know this is a minor detail but I just wanted to point this out.

Overall I really like this monitor a lot and am happy with my purchase. There are some other features to this monitor which I haven't mentioned yet but its nice that it has a headphone jack for when you want to game at night when everyone in your house is asleep. It has SPDIF output for when you need thumping audio through an audio receiver or a sound bar.I don't expect I'll ever use that but its good to know its there. It is not a very portable monitor but since it doesn't weigh much, you could technically use it for lan parties and such. This monitor is a keeper and I hope it lasts me a long time.If you have any questions, feel free to comment and I will do my best to answer them. If I could give a more accurate score for this monitor, I would rate it a 4.5.

ASUS MS226H - 21.5-Inch Wide LCD Monitor Review

ASUS MS226H - 21.5 inch Wide LCD MonitorI bought this monitor to use with my Mac Book Pro 15" laptop (latest model). The monitor looks great, very easy to assemble, and very very light weight. Unfortunately, I'm having difficulty getting it work properly though.

The monitor came with a VGA-VGA cable. When I connected it to my laptop using a Mini DisplayPort - VGA adaptor, the highest resolution I could use on the monitor was 1440 X 900. That's same as my laptop's resolution and basically defeats my very purpose of having an external monitor.

Next I tried with the HDMI-DVI cable which was also bundled with the monitor. I connected to the laptop using Mini DisplayPort - DVI adaptor. This time, I could select up to 1600 X 900 on the monitor. It's better than what I could get with VGA cables, but still not using the highest resolution possible with this monitor (1920 X 1080).

With HDMI-DVI setup, I also see a few additional resolution choices at the top on the Display Preferences on my mac : 1080p, 1080i, 720p, and 480p. They all have a TV icon next to them, and I figure they're for using the monitor as TV. I selected 1080p from that list, but the text display on the screen is still not crisp and I still see it grainy. And I can't figure out how to tell the laptop or monitor to treat it as a regular LCD monitor rather than a TV.

At this point, I am not sure if it is an issue of mac-compatible drivers or this is what the monitor is capable of with a Mac. I couldn't find any Mac drivers from Asus website either. I want to keep the monitor because it's a great-looking piece, but what good is it if it doesn't work as well as it claims to?I am curious how one of the reviewers got it to work perfectly fine with his 13" Mac Book Pro - would you care to share details of your settings, perhaps? Thanks.

ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black Review

ASUS VH236H 23 Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black[...]

One of my criteria is to have built-in speakers.I don't have external speakers nor do I like more tangled wires. The speakers sound better than my old Viewsonic VA1912wb I replaced. That is a welcoming fact.Initially, there was a lot of waviness on screen. The troubleshooting guide suggested video connection as the issue.Turns out that it was my old VGA cable (I didn't want to craw behind the computer initially...).Once I hooked up with the new cable provided, it started working perfectly.I'm running Windows XP Media Center. After I turned off and on my computer, it recognized the new monitor and reset the resolution and refresh rate profile. It now runs at 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz.No driver is needed.I was afraid that I would need to update my video driver since I have a 4 yr+ old computer but I don't.With HDMI, DVI, and SPDIF Audio Output, it will be more than capable to handle my future computer (definitely not with Vista, though).

Of course, not everything is perfect with this monitor. The buttons and OSD menu are not great. But they are within my expectation based on other reviews I mentioned before. In addition, once you move away from the center view by, say, more than 45 degrees, the picture quality starts degrading rapidly. It means that if you want to show someone standing behind you the pictures on your screen, he/she would need to bend down, sit down, or step back in order to appreciate what you are trying to show. These are just minor flaws that I'm willing to live with for what I'm willing to pay.Overall, I'm a very happy customer.August 11, 2009 Update:

Shortly after I wrote the initial impression above, I began to experience some flickering with the screen. This is my description to ASUS Customer Service:

"While in use, occasionally monitor would flicker.Anywhere from showing multi-color vertical bands (partial or full screen) to black or white screen.Sometimes it's vertical and horizontal lines covering the full screen (forming dense grid pattern). This is a brand new monitor (in use for 1 week).I'm using VGA cable. I've unplugged and plugged the cable and made sure connection is good.I've updated my video card driver to the latest version but did not solve the problem.Saw this posted in forum but no solution replied. If not resolved, may need to return the monitor."

ASUS replied in about 2 days making several recommendations.I followed the advice the best I could.See my subsequent reply of findings:

"Firstly, would you please tell us when and after what action this problem occurred?
1. When the computer first boot up.Doesn't matter whether the monitor is on first or on after boot up.The screen flickers with vertical multi-color bands on the right or sometimes the whole screen. At times there are both vertical and horiztonal bands that form white fabric like pattern.Duration could last for 2 sec to good 5 seconds.
2. When in use during any computer session.Very sporadic. Sometimes happens while surfing the net.Not always repeatable. In one particular session, every time I went to dpreview.com, it flickered. But it didn't happen again since.

Secondly, please press Splendid key on LCD about 3 seconds to load the default settings.
Did it and no change.

Please replace another graphic card.
Not possible but I have another laptop to test with. This laptop is much newer... 1 yr old. When switch to ASUS as external monitor, the same flickering happened, for long or short duration. But other than that, I did not experience other instances.

Thirdly, please check if there is any updated BIOS or driver for your other PC components.
Updated BIOS.

Now the only times that it flickers are when the computer first boots up or when it goes in and out of screen saver or when the monitor is first turned on.I've not observed other in-session interruptions as before.

Otherwise please change this LCD to another PC to test."

Today, ASUS told me that this may be defective.I've proceeded to replace my unit via Amazon. Will update again in the future.Up to this point, ASUS customer service has been prompt.August 15, 2009:

Requested Amazon for a replacement on Aug 11.Received a new unit 2 days later.Plugged it in.Not a single problem was observed. All flickering has been gone since.I have to commend the excellent customer services from both ASUS and Amazon.Couldn't be happier.

ASUS VW224T - 22-Inch Wide LCD Monitor Review

ASUS VW224T - 22 inch Wide LCD MonitorCame in the mail today.I love this monitor! It has a much clearer picture than my 2 year old Dell 19 inch monitor.I'm using the VGA connector with an Ubuntu Linux computer and Intel GMA 950 graphics.Great picture. It was so bright, I had to reduce the brightness by 50%.Not a problem. It supports 1280x800 resolution, which my old monitor didn't.I prefer that, because I can see it without reading glasses. The max resolution I can get with Linux is 1680x1050, which my other Dell monitor didn't support either.I plan to try it with DVI input on a Mac next.My first impression was 'this thing is freakin huge!'I didn't think a 22 inch monitor was that much bigger than a 19 inch monitor until I saw them side by side.I didn't know it had internal speakers until I took it out of the box. They sound ok for monitor speakers, but not as good as my external speakers. The monitor speakers work ok for Skype and reduce the mess of wiring behind my computer.

ASUS VW266H 25.5-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Black Review

ASUS VW266H 25.5 inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - BlackLike it a lot.I bought one to go with my Asus VW246H 24" 16:9 and liked it so much I snagged a second VW266h 25.5".The but comes in for several reasons. Both VW266h displays suffered from a bluish tint.Different batches manufactured several months apart.Issue has been reported by others in several forums.Calibration is the cure.A hueypro calibrator took care of it just fine. The huey pro is not as automatic as one thinks, even after setting the monitor back to defaults it took several attempts to get "close enough" matching for dual VW266H displays. The blue tinge was quite noticeable when the VW266H was next to my VW246H. More than likely you will need a calibrator to make the VW266H look as great as it can.You might not notice if you are running just a single monitor and are not very computer savvy.

The second issue is that it is 1920x1200 and 25.5" diagonally. This means the dot pitch is a bit on the large size and some smaller text loses its image quality. In Windows 7 I found upping the text size to a custom setting of 115% pretty much took care of the issue.Every now and then the text is a bit screwy on a few web pages.Any higher than 115% and text on those same web pages are really messed up.

Color shift is a bit more than 24" monitors.Color shift is a problem on all TN displays, IMHO anything larger than a 25.5" would not doubt greatly benefit from higher resolution, say 2048 x 1152 or 2560 x 1600.Hard to find IPS/VA LCD panels give you greater viewing angles and better color but for most TN LCD panels work out just fine.I Have not found a decent IPS/VA panel larger than 22" and that is too small for my old eyes.Don't let anyone kid you, if you want a monitor that you can mount on an optional arm or mount so you can rotate it 180 degrees for text you really should be looking at IPS or *VA displays,TN displays simply are not good as vertical text viewers.

The back cover pops off for those who want access to the VESA mount.

Loving the real estate and size of these 25.5" displays. The size makes up for the shortcomings. If I had it to do over I would probably buy the X-Rite i1 Display 2 instead of the hueypro.IMHO the hueypro just seems cheap and the X-Rite i1 Display 2 gets better user reviews than the spyder3 or the X-Rite i1 Display 2.The hueypro is quite a bit less expensive and did do its job after several tries.I would buy the VW266H displays again and I would not be without a calibrator even if it is just a hueypro no matter what monitors I bought. The VH266H offers a lot of bang for the buck.

Monitors seem to be the hardest thing to choose in comparison to other computer parts.TN versus IPS/VA panels. Google is your friend. 1920x1200 (16:10) versus 1929x1080 (16:9).I found that TN panels are just fine for most as are either 16:9 or 16:10.
