ViewSonic VA2323wm 23-Inch 16:9 1080p Digital LCD Monitor Review

ViewSonic VA2323wm 23 inch 16:9 1080p Digital LCD MonitorI seldom write reviews, but this monitor is being unfairly trashed and I can't resist...

I spent a lot of time selecting this monitor in Dec 2009. I needed to expand my notebook's desktop so I could see a bunch of eye busting text and graphics all at once. I am a semi-retired techno-savvy software industry vet. And, I am cheap. So I actually first tried a $140 22 inch 1680x1050 AOC monitor. I also looked at a lot of competing products in the under $200 category, including refurbished and open box units. In the end I returned the AOC and decided to buy this value-focused model from a vendor I trust. I have no regrets. None.

I have used the Viewsonic VA2323wm heavily for a solid month, grinding away at computer source code and fussy graphics. I am very happy with the image quality. This monitor is totally well behaved. Quiet (some LCDs aren't, but you won't notice it until you are working in the middle of the night). Simple design. Nice narrow bezel with matt finish. Nice little buttons, right where you need them. Actually, you may never need to touch them because it turns itself on and off automatically (I did use them once - to turn down the brightness). For my application the unit is perfect. I would tell you if anything was wrong. Honest!!

Bottom line: Solid value from a trusted vendor. Buy and Enjoy

For what it is worth, here are my comments on what other folks wrote:

I think the person with the old Dell is unfairly blaming Viewsonic. The Dell probably can't put out a good signal at 1920x1080 pix, or is running at a lower resolution. In my experience, LCD monitors really don't look good at any resolutions other than their rated max.

If you have an old computer, it is a good idea to check if your computer can deliver 1920x1080 pix. This can be difficult to do. For my 4 year old Gateway I had to go to Intel's chipset site and it was ugly, and I still wasn't sure. In reality, the only way to know for sure was to plug it in. I am lucky that my old notebook drives this monitor well. It sounds like the Dell user was not so lucky.

I agree that the 16x9 ratio is an adjustment. But if you want more pixels (which I did), it makes sense to spread them out horizontally. I wanted to see the full content of two typical web pages side by side. This 16x9 1920x1080 pixel monitor does a way better job than the 16x10 1680x1050 display I tried first.

Regarding height adjustment, you won't find it on a monitor in this price range.

Personally, I don't see the lack of a DVI cord asan issue. A DVI cord is only $10. Is this worth a star?

Most people with older equipment (like me) are still using VGA. The included VGA cord saved me scrounging around in the basement for one of the many VGA cords I have discarded over the years.

You might be concerned that this monitor does not have HDMI. I plan to skip DVI and go to HDMI next. I stopped worrying about it when I found out that a HDMI to DVI adapter costs $10.

Yes, the install disk has glitches on XP. But don't waste you time with the disk. The driver download from viewsonic.com is flawless.

HINT: Always download the latest drivers, unless you are somewhere with no access to the net. When you use a disk you risk wasting time experiencing a bug that has been fixed since your box left the factory.

I don't use the speakers. But just for yucks, I plugged them in. It is true, they are really bad. You could use them in a pinch, like for system sounds. But honestly, folks, looking for good speakers on a monitor is like, well, looking for teats on a boar hog.

Buy and Enjoy!
