The monitor installs easily and is automatically recognized by XP as a Plug and Play Monitor. The only advantage to installing Viewsonic's driver package (that I could tell) was the addition of a color-calibrated profile -- which didn't seem to make any difference.
Like most modern LCDs, its stand has only a tilt adjust and no height adjustment. I guess the assumption is that with a wide viewing angle, height adjustment is less critical.
I like that the screen has a matte, non-glare finish. I wish I could say the same about the bezel. The high gloss attracts fingerprints and dust like... well you fill in your own colorful analogy.
Button placement, on the lower right, is a poor choice for placing two displays side by side and flush. You can barely read the button labels against the piano black bezel, and the status indicator is far too big and bright. But I like how input source switching (VGA or DVI) can be achieved with a single button press.
The OSD has its share of quirks. Why did Viewsonic think the end user would enjoy being nagged about setting the display to 1920x1080 for optimal performance? Thankfully, this can be disabled. But it should never have been in the software in the first place.
As so many others have noted, the sound quality of the built-in rear-firing 2x2W speakers are truly abysmal -- completely without bass response of any kind and adequate for only the most basic of computer beeps.
The different ECO modes are an interesting concept and might be helpful if you plan on leaving the display on 24/7 without a screen saver -- to monitor a dynamic website for example. The most conservative setting (50% reduction in brightness) seems a bit too dark at first, but I was surprised at how quickly my eyes adapted.
In contrast (pun intended) the dynamic contrast feature worked poorly, often rendering video that was simply too dark. Also, ECO shouldn't be used with dynamic contrast and it would be good user interface design to automatically shut off the one when the other is selected. It would also be more useful if it were easier to access. I need to press nine buttons every time I want to change ECO settings. I'd love to see all 4 buttons replaced with a pushable scroll-wheel like on an HTC Mogul phone.
Rather than dynamic contrast, I would much rather have a dynamic ECO feature -- turning down the brightness during periods of less redrawing activity. Or better yet -- have some ability to sense ambient light levels and adjust brightness accordingly.
Bottom line: This is an excellent display for gaming, watching movies, and everyday use so long as you BYOS (bring your own speakers). Graphics professionals will want to look elsewhere.
